Greg Nelson Art

process

Greg uses narrative and illustrative approaches to evoke emotions, curiosity, and pleasure; capturing beauty in all its forms. He focuses on the psychological aspects of the subject, including a story or vision that brings the figure or landscape to life.

How I define multi-media art

My works are multi-media paintings on canvas. I integrate oil and acrylic paint, photography, and ink, to find the right balance for each composition. I then combine these visual media using digital processes to transfer my work to 100% natural, archival grade canvas and further enhance the work by integrating paint on the canvas. Below I describe what is involved to create a new work.

An idea is born

The genesis for a new artwork can be preconceived or spontaneously discovered in the moment. Hiking or visiting another country often inspires landscapes and other images. For figurative work, depending upon how a model’s body moves or how light falls upon him or her, the results may inspire a different work than I had originally planned.

Working with models

Much like a “green screen” used for special effects in movies, working with models in a studio with controlled lighting yields flexible results with numerous possibilities. However, placing a studio image into a specific imagined setting can be challenging to make it look natural. At times it’s better to work with models on location to produce an authentic looking result.

Supporting images and infinite choices

Once a concept is developed, supporting images are researched, painted or photographed. When all images are in a digital environment I control the composition from the placement of objects to light direction, color and texture. The choices and variations are endless. Weeks, sometimes months, go into my creative and final decision making process.

Preparing the final work

Additional paint and other media are applied to the comprehensive work. This enhances texture and depth and the brilliance of color.
